The Chinati Foundation
Art Center
The Chinati Foundation is a contemporary art museum in Marfa, Texas. Founded by visionary Donald Judd in 1986, the mission of the museum is to preserve the authority of the artist to determine “how their work will be seen in permanent relationship to architecture and the land.” The museum was built on a historic fort and boasts an incredible collection that is fully entwined with the buildings and the classic western landscape.
Ballroom Marfa
Art Center
If you are looking for a fantastic public museum, check out Ballroom Marfa, a free contemporary art museum in a 1920s ballroom. Ballroom Marfa invites artists and musicians to “engage with the magnificent landscape of the Big Bend.” The work on display is cross-disciplinary and reflects a diverse range of artists and creators. If you like large-scale installations, this is the museum for you.
