The Chinati Foundation
The Chinati Foundation is a contemporary art museum in Marfa, Texas. Founded by visionary Donald Judd in 1986, the mission of the museum is to preserve the authority of the artist to determine “how their work will be seen in permanent relationship to architecture and the land.” The museum was built on a historic fort and boasts an incredible collection that is fully entwined with the buildings and the classic western landscape.
If you are looking for a fantastic public museum, check out Ballroom Marfa, a free contemporary art museum in a 1920s ballroom. Ballroom Marfa invites artists and musicians to “engage with the magnificent landscape of the Big Bend.” The work on display is cross-disciplinary and reflects a diverse range of artists and creators. If you like large-scale installations, this is the museum for you.
Garza Marfa is a delightful shop, full of delightful goods for the home. While they are especially known for their furniture, the textiles and ceramics are also well worth a look. The stunning work of local makers is on display everywhere you look, so leave extra room in your suitcase.
The Marfa Store
The Marfa Store is a jewel box of a shop that hasn’t forgotten the power of an immersive brick and mortar experience. A spirit of experimentation infuses this beautifully curated shop, and it is worth visiting again and again for the superb experience design at play.
